2023 is coming to an end and brands and businesses need to plan for the new year. So, what can they do to maximise their marketing efforts, and how can they change their strategy to adapt to what’s coming next? Well, that’s rather simple. Take into account the social media trends for the next year. But, who has the time to actually search the internet and find them out? Well, we did, and you’re in luck. We’re sharing them with you ;)

Let’s dive into the latest social media trends for the new year:

AI - should you or should you not use it?

You should use it or rather your teams use it to help them ease their workload. But, no more than that. According to a study conducted by Hootsuite, it seems that 62% of consumers are less likely to engage and trust content produced by an AI app. Now, you must be thinking: ‘but, wasn’t the whole point of these apps to ease the creative workload?’. Well, yes and no. You still need to add a human touch to everything an AI app is creating. The people behind your social media accounts know better what to create and how to engage with your target audience. We’re not there yet, and even if we were, we still need human input on what goes out in the world. AI can’t be omnipresent and stay in touch with every new thing that happens in your industry.

So, to answer the ‘should you or should you not’ questions from above, the answer is you should, but keep it as minimal as you can. You can use it to generate social media content ideas, or ideas on how to maximise your sales. But, let the professionals actually give those ideas your brand’s spin. You need it.

To promote or not to promote? What is the brand question?

The people have responded, and they don’t want promotion according to the same study conducted by Hootsuite. They want to be entertained and they want the content they’re seeing to make them laugh, smirk, or just exhale some air out of their nose. They want to feel something. Again, you might be asking yourself: ‘You guys are mad, if I only entertain them how can I make sales?’. Well, that’s easy (from a marketer's point of view, but,  brands don’t listen!). Entertain them, make them feel something, and then the sales will come. Give them something interesting so they can engage with.

Take the viral moment between Balenciaga & Ikea (the famous towel skirt - if that doesn’t spark your memory, we made a post about it, check it out here). They want more of that type of content. Trust us, we know what we’re saying. Spark their curiosity, make them feel something, and then boom, you have their attention, their interest in your services or products, and then you make the sales.

It’s all about making them feel something, entertaining them. What makes you special and how can you relate with your audience? According to the same Hootsuite study, it shows that 56% of consumers think that brands should be more relatable on social media. And to make more sense of what we’re saying, have you seen the social media accounts for Ryanair?

The early bird gets the worm - this applies to social media as well!

What we mean by this is timely engagements and responses get you the sale. We’re talking about organic engagements with your target audience. Social media is about being social, so you need to interact with your followers. Follow new people who are from your pool of potential clients, leave a comment or a DM, and try to build relationships. They might not have a need for your products or services now, but when the time comes and they need, they’ll think of your brand. So, that relationship building pays off in the long run. Plus, they can also recommend you to people they know.

One thing that brought our clients organic sales, is engaging with new followers. Anytime we had a new follower on our client's social media accounts, we engaged with them. You might say that’s intrusive and we just want to sell. But, think about it, have you heard of a brand that genuinely engages with its followers? Of course, not! Nobody has the time for that. But, we’re different, and that is what brought our clients organic sales. So, it’s all about timing and having a clear strategy behind it.

And the saying that you should be where your target audience is, still applies. If your audience is active on Instagram and TikTok, well you should use these apps too! The trend in 2024 is to cut ties with some social media apps and be more attentive to the ones that might bring the highest ROI. Not conforming to the norms and sticking to what gives you the best understanding of your audience. Not following the masses and copying what works for others and just sticking to what works for you.
